UNITED KINGDOM, LEEDS : Steam rises from the eight cooling towers at the Ferrybridge power station near Leeds, in the north of England, 30 October 2006. The coal fired power plant was the first 2000MW power station in Europe and first supplied energy to the National Grid in 1966. Station has two 198m high chimneys and eight, 115m high cooling towers, which are the largest of their kind in Europe. World leaders must act urgently to avert a looming environmental catastrophe, the author of a major British report which sounds a wake-up call on climate change said Monday. Former World Bank chief economist Sir Nicholas Stern singled out the United States, China and India as economic powerhouses whose backing is crucial for a global solution. The world must be prepared to pay now -- in the form of things like green taxes or emissions trading schemes -- to prevent economic fallout in the future which could be on the scale of the Great Depression of the 1930s, he added.
